The Las Vegas-Review Journal Editorial Essay Program for High School Students

"Should schools start charging for extracurricular activities and sports to raise revenue?"

Students are to compose a well-written editorial commentary on a topic. Topics are to be posted Sept. 1, Nov. 1, Jan. 1, Mar. 1 and May 1 of the school year, 2009-10.

Official Guidelines for Students Speak Out editorial essay contest:
  • 750-900 word essay in editorial format. Essays should be mostly persuasive and not explanatory.
  • Essay must be typed, double-spaced, minimum 12-point font and must include student's name, school, grade level, and teacher's name at the top of the first page.
  • Teachers should use their discretion in submitting essays.
  • No inappropriate language or comments please.
  • Winning student will receive $200 cash and his/her teacher will receive recognition when the essay is published. Winners will be required to fill out a W-9 form and a parent-guardian release.

Final drafts are due next to the last Friday of the month by 5:00 p.m. (Be sure to leave time for school mail transit.)

The editorial staff of the Review-Journal will choose the best essay for publication in a Sunday editorial section.
