Being Kind to Animals -- Issue 18 -- May 1-7, 2010

This week's standard:

Students identify the needs of plants and animals. (Character Education: Caring)

Activities:

1. Use newspaper words and pictures to make a poster showing how to care for pets.

2. Divide a circle into three sections. In the sections put newspaper words/pictures for pets that could live in an apartment, a house, and a farm or ranch.

3. Circle newspaper words and pictures that show things to use in taking care of pets and things to use in playing with pets.

4. Why is it important to be responsible for (a) feeding a pet, (b) giving a pet water, and (c) making sure a pet gets exercise?

5. Make a daily schedule showing how you would take care of a pet (or a pretend pet).

Have a Great Time Reading! -- Issue 19 -- May 8-14, 2010

This week's standard:

Students identify forms and elements of literature. (Language Arts: Reading)

Activities:

1. Use newspaper words and pictures to make a Summer Reading poster.

2. Choose three books in The Mini Page that you would like to read this summer. Ask a friend to choose three books. Talk about your choices.

3. Find newspaper stories that would make good books about an athlete, about making something and about another country. Explain your choices.

4. Which books discussed in this Mini Page are about (a) real people or things, (b) animals, and (c) another time period?

5. Find four newspaper stories. Take the "who" from one story, and the "what," "when" and "where" from each of the other stories. Write a new story that combines your four "W's."

Earthquakes! -- Issue 20 -- May 15-21, 2010

This week's standard:

Students understand changes in the Earth and sky. (Science: Earth and Space Science)

Activities:

1. For fun, find five things in the newspaper that shake. Explain your choices.

2. Circle newspaper pictures of items you would send to help people who have just been in an earthquake.

3. On one half of a piece of paper, paste newspaper words/pictures of tools to repair or rebuild houses. On the other half, paste words/pictures of materials used to make those repairs.

4. How do these terms relate to earthquakes: (a) tsunami, (b) plates, (c) epicenter, and (d) Ring of Fire?

5. Use the Web sites in today's Mini Page to learn about earthquake careers. Choose a career you might like. Write a paragraph about the qualifications for that career.

C-A-M-P! -- Issue 21 -- May 22-28, 2010

This week's standard:

Students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. (Physical Education)

Activities:

1. Draw a picture of a suitcase. Paste newspaper words and pictures for things you would take to camp on your suitcase.

2. Talk with friends. List different ways going to camp would make you a better person.

3. In the newspaper, circle items you would find at a team sports camp in red, a music/drama camp in green, and a swimming camp in blue.

4. Why are these items important at camp: (a) sunscreen, (b) towels, (c) water bottle, and (d) paper/pencil?

5. Write a story about yourself as a counselor helping young campers during their first few days at camp.
