Water Towers -- Issue 14 -- April 3-9 This week's standard: Students develop understanding about science and technology. (Science: Science and Technology) Activities: 1. Use newspaper pictures and words to make a poster that shows the different ways we use water. 2. Look at the weather map in the newspaper. Circle areas where there will be clouds in red. Circle areas where there will be rain or snow in blue. 3. Interview several friends. Ask them how they save water. Then ask them if they know where there is a water tower. 4. How are these things important to water towers: (a) filters, (b) remote cameras, (c) pumps, and (d) vacuums? 5. Use the Internet to find at least three different ways people purify water. Students identify forms and elements of literature. (Language Arts: Reading) Activities: 1. Paste three newspaper pictures on a piece of paper. Write a sentence that tells a story for each picture. 2. Pick three books in The Mini Page that you would like to read. Explain why. 3. Match books in today*s Mini Page with friends who would like them. 4. Which author/illustrator (a) has a hobby you like, (b) writes about real people, and (c) got started with writing or drawing in school? 5. Develop a story to go with a newspaper headline. Draw a series of five pictures that tell the story. Write the story under the pictures. (standards by Dr. Sherrye D. (Science: Personal and Social Perspectives) Activities: 1. Use newspaper words and pictures to make a Happy Earth Day card for a friend. 2. Make a *Growing Green* poster. Use newspaper words and pictures of things that can help you grow plants. 3. Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper. On one side, paste newspaper words and pictures for things that save water. On the other side, paste things that can save electricity. 4. What can people do to (a) create gardens, (b) clean up the environment, and (c) recycle? 5. With family members, make a plan to help the planet. List specific things you'll do to save electricity, save water and replenish the Earth. (standards by Dr. Sherrye D. Garrett, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi) The Dust Bowl -- Issue 17 -- April 24-30, 2010 This week's standard: Students understand that history relates to events and people of other times and places. (History) Activities: 1. Make a "Growing Things" poster with newspaper words and pictures for things to plant, equipment used to plant, and things that help plants grow. 2. Find five different things in the newspaper that you could use to clean your house after a dust storm. 3. Find three individuals in the newspaper who could help people in a dust storm. Explain your choices. 4. How are these things important in learning about the Dust Bowl: (a) drought, (b) overfarming, (c) dust pneumonia, and (d) the Soil Conservation Service? 5.
