Let the Games Begin! -- Issue 5 -- Jan. 30-Feb. 5, 2010

This week's standard:

Students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. (Physical Education)

Activities:

1. Paste newspaper words and pictures on a piece of paper to make a Winter Olympics poster.

2. Ask friends about the Olympic sports in today's Mini Page. Which ones have they tried? Which ones would they like to try?

3. With a friend, circle newspaper ads in red for equipment that athletes use to train, and in blue, equipment they use in their sports.

4. Divide a circle into three sections. In the sections, write the sports that use (a) blades, (b) runners and (c) skis.

5. Research a combined Olympic event. Write about why the two elements were selected for that combination.

Honoring Our Presidents -- Issue 6 -- Feb. 6-12, 2010

This week's standard:

Students understand that history relates to events and people of other times and places by identifying examples of interesting Americans. (Social Studies: History)

Activities:

1. Use newspaper words and pictures to make a poster for a U.S. president.

2. Design a monument for a person in the newspaper. Draw the monument. Write several sentences explaining your monument.

3. Find three people in the newspaper who deserve recognition: an elected official, an athlete and an entertainer. Write a sentence for each person.

4. Which of the monuments (a) have seated presidents, (b) has a standing president, (c) had to wait for 25 years to be finished, and (d) has outdoor 'rooms' ?

5. Which of the monuments featured in this Mini Page would you like to visit? Why?

Playing With Math -- Issue 7 -- Feb. 13-19, 2010

This week's standard:

Students have a basic understanding of numbers, operations and quantitative reasoning. (Math)

Activities:

1. Divide a paper into two halves. On one side, paste odd numbers from the newspaper. On the other, paste even numbers.

2. Pick a newspaper page. Have a friend pick another page. Count the number of words in the headlines on each page. Who has the most words?

3. Circle 10 newspaper numbers that are less than 100 in red; circle 10 that are more than 100 in blue.

4. Race with a friend to find multiples of 4 in the weather report in the newspaper.

5. Find all the different ways numbers are used on one newspaper page (such as price, size, score, date, etc.).

Awesome Otters -- Issue 8 -- Feb. 20-26, 2010

This week's standard:

Students understand the characteristics and life cycles of organisms. (Science: Life Science)

Activities:

1. Draw a picture of otters swimming. Paste newspaper words about otters around the picture.

2. Divide a piece of paper into two columns. In one, paste newspaper words/ pictures of animals smaller than sea otters. In the other, paste words/pictures of animals larger than sea otters.

3. Draw two large circles that overlap in the middle. In the left circle, describe sea otters. In the right, describe river otters. In the overlapping center, describe how sea and river otters are alike.

4. How are these important to otters: (a) kelp, (b) thick fur, (c) webbed paws, and (d) sea urchins?

5. Design a brochure to save otters and their habitats.
